Initial D Creator Launches 'Subaru to Subaru' Sequel Manga

Shuuichi Shigeno, the creator of Initial D and MF Ghost, began a new manga titled Subaru to Subaru (Subaru and Subaru) in the 34th issue of Weekly Young Magazine on Tuesday. The new manga serves as a sequel to his previous works Initial D and MF Ghost, continuing in the same plotline. Initial D ran in Weekly Young Magazine from June 1995 to July 2013. Kodansha published the manga in 48 volumes between November 1995 and November 2013. The manga has a cumulative 56 million copies of its volumes in circulation. The first two television anime premiered in Spring 1998 and Fall 1999, followed by a sequel movie in January 2001. The third, fourth, and fifth television anime aired in Spring 2004, Fall 2012, and Spring 2014. SANZIGEN and LIDENFILMS produced three movies between August 2014 and February 2016. Tokyopop originally licensed the manga in English and released the first 33 volumes from May 2002 to January 2009. Kodansha US republished all 48 volumes digitally in April and July 2019, and began releasing an omnibus print edition in March 2024. The sixth volume went on sale on June 3. MF Ghost ran in Weekly Young Magazine from September 2017 to February 2025, marking a seven and a half year serialization. Kodansha published the 23rd and final volume on June 6. Felix Film produced two television anime seasons in Fall 2023 and Fall 2024. A third season is in production for a 2026 airing. Kodansha USA began publishing the manga digitally in English in January 2022 and released the 22nd volume on July 15.
