Manga 'Hirayasumi' Receives Anime, Live-Action Series

Publishing company Shogakukan announced an anime adaptation and a live-action drama of Keigo Shinzou's Hirayasumi manga on Tuesday. Shinzou drew an illustration to commemorate the announcement (pictured). Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions and North American publishing company VIZ Media are co-producing the anime. Production +h., the animation studio behind Chikyuugai Shounen Shoujo (The Orbital Children) and Dead Dead Demons Dededede Destruction, is handling the animation. The live-action drama series will air on NHK's Yorudra (Evening Drama) programming block in 15-minute episodes from Monday to Thursday at 10:45 p.m. in Fall 2025. Shinzou began drawing the slice of life seinen manga in Big Comic Spirits in April 2021. The manga entered a brief hiatus in October 2023 before resuming in January 2024. Shogakukan published the eighth volume in November 2024, with the ninth volume going on sale on July 30. Hirayasumi has a cumulative 1.1 million copies of its volumes in circulation. VIZ Media licensed the manga in English in October 2023 and released the fifth volume on May 20. The sixth volume is planned for an August 19 release. The manga has also been published in multiple foreign languages, including French, Italian, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. Hirayasumi was nominated for the 15th and 17th Manga Taisho. The manga also placed among the top 20 titles in the male readers category in the 2023 Kono Manga ga Sugoi! rankings and MyAnimeList's 2024 edition of You Should Read This Manga. Synopsis Living in Asagaya, 29-year-old Hiroto Ikuta spends his days working at his part-time job and chatting with the locals. He likes visiting Hanae Wada most, a grumpy yet kind elderly woman whom Hiroto calls "Granny." Hiroto's time with Granny is sadly cut short when she passes away from a heart attack. To his surprise, Hiroto inherits Granny's house as she never married or had children. Three months later, 18-year-old Natsumi Kobayashi moves from her hometown to attend art school. With nowhere else to go, she stays with her cousin Hiroto, whom she has not seen in years. Despite their opposing personalities, the pair begin living under the same roof as they struggle through their seemingly mundane lives.
